HOW TO AVOID LIGHT LEAKS FOR LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY

Posted on 14 June, 2018 in light leaks

What is most important for a perfect photograph? Light it is. Photography is art that needs precise movement and focuses in a given time. Light leaks happen whenever there is filter used for long exposures. Light leaks ruin the photos if they are not prevented from happening.

WHY LIGHT LEAKS ARE SO DAMAGING

Light leaks act as a killer for the photos. Because they are almost impossible to remove after processing. All sorts of damage like dots, dust spots, color contrast are easy to adjust using photoshop or any other similar software but light leaks cannot be removed from the picture once its processed.

WHAT CAUSES LIGHT LEAKS?

There are different causes of light leaks especially they occur through gaps and holes. The picture is exposed to extra light which gives the picture more glow that just ruins the picture. Excessive light can have a bad impact on the image. And no software can remove them once processed. If the camera is not quality or it is damaged then the exposure to the photo can be long.

HOW TO AVOID LIGHT LEAKS IN LONG EXPOSURE PHOTOGRAPHY

The first thing that will help is covering the viewfinder. I have personnel experienced with these sorts of leaks problem. In the beginning, I used to have filters to slow the speed. It is evident when you come to photography that you have to cover the viewfinder otherwise there is a chance that your picture gets light leak. I struggled in the start but slowly I learned that I had to take precautions before taking photos. After some time in the field of photography, I learned it perfectly.

Failing sometimes to cover the viewfinder will bring about light seeping through the lens and achieving the sensor, triggering glare and other unwanted artifacts, in particular when sunlight is behind you. The better sunlight is, the lighter drip you’ll see. Many of today’s video cameras include built-in functions to obstruct the viewfinder, but if yours will not, simply place a bit of dark material or paper before it while photographing. Otherwise, you can also buy a viewfinder cover. However, you might not think so, the order you place the filtration systems into the holder is important. Just a tiny gap between your filtration system and holder can be adequate to cause unwanted light achieving the sensor. Click here.

USE SCREW-IN FILTERS

Regrettably, the best square filtration systems could be very pricey and aren’t necessarily the best to start if you are not used to long exposure picture taking. Screw-in filter systems are equally as good and despite having certain restrictions, they hardly ever cause any light drip. Being that they are mounted straight on the zoom lens’ filtration thread, you get rid of the possibility of light finding ways to leak through.

COVER SPACES & OPENINGS

The techniques above should eliminate light drip but if you are still experiencing it, the ultimate way to find the foundation of the problem is by covering all spaces and holes with gaffer tape. Make an effort to cover every space individually and take pictures in-between to find where in fact the light is seeping through. Do not forget to cover the filtration holder as well, as a built system might be the reason why you’re experiencing a light leak. Check out this site: https://lightleaklove.com/blogs/lightleaklove/15623020-176-free-premiere-pro-effects-plugins-the-ultimate-freebie-list

Posted on 1 March, 2016 in light leaks

Light leak is light leakage that occurs in analog cameras and cause overexposure in some areas of the film. The result is lighter spots, usually in shades of red, yellow and orange. The effect may be caused by holes in the body of the machine or by opening the appropriate place not in the same. What would a “defect” in the picture, just gaining popularity along with vintage photos of style.

It is indeed possible create the effect in Photoshop using different options such as Light leaks for FCPXIn fact some people are even able to get Free light leaks online. We tried to make the whole explanation as simple as possible, just showing you the principle of how you can play it. To achieve more realistic results, you only need to work a little more with these same tools. You can also mix colors and mix effects to make the photo look good.

Are you ready to know more interesting facts aboutLight leaks

Today we understand a little more about one of the most popular terms of analogue photography, the light leaks. Theyare nothing more or less than those red, orange grades and yellowish spots that always appeared in their old photos. In fact, these leaks are indeed accidents that happen with your analog camera, when you inadvertently open that lid where the film is. They used to be Free light leaks and often were seen as issues, however today they are nice and can be done with pretty much any picture, thanks to the help of photoshop or even Light leaks for premiere pro.

How does it happen with analog cameras though?

Light enters that space and does that “burning” effect to the film, but as it happens when we quickly closed this cover back, the result is just a blip, not the entire picture, or all photos from the film. To be an accident, many criticize this kind of effect, but in fact it is only gaining more space nowadays, especially among us, photographers teenagers and lovers of the photos. When we discovered all this, we were dying to try to make the effect artificially in photoshop or with Light leaks for premiere pro. At first it was a disaster, but with time things get better. I will show my two ways to get the right tones, and a hint that will help more.

01) Gradient and Brush

After editing your photo with Light leaks for premiere pro, create a new gradient layer that goes from red (not too strong a preference of wine) until transparent. Adjust the angle of the gradient and size. Then just put this layer place in the division and merging ready mode! You can do the same, but use a smoky brush and paint with the red in photo corners, where to find it gets better. See the print.

02) Textures

The internet offers few textures only, but that does help a lot. Just go online, open each one, save, and when to apply to the photo, put the blending division mode.

03) Tip

The most important thing to do is to know the purpose of what we are talking about, if you do not know, check online. Are you ready to try and be a vintage artist? Have fun with Light leaks for premiere pro!

Create Light Leaks and Lomo Effects Using Actions in Photoshop

Posted on 1 October, 2014 in Wedding Video

Creating light leaks and Lomo effects using Photoshop isn’t as hard as you may think. And what’s even better is that you can get a ton of the resources needed to achieve it free too! Yes, that’s right- there’s free light leaks resources out there just waiting for your experiments.

Who doesn’t love the retro shading effects of a lens flare, Lomo effect or well placed light leak. While the days of film camera creating them at the inopportune moment are over, you can still create this sometimes glamorous retro look intentionally- exactly how you want it.

Getting started creating a light leak action.

Boot up your Photoshop program, and make sure you have both the image you want to great the effect in and the Lomo or light leak template you want to use to create the effect to hand unless you’d prefer to use the actions option. Start your transformation by using the Windows>Actions option, or simply pressing (Alt+ F9) to open the Actions option. Now we’re ready to go.More info here!

From the ‘actions’ panel.

Click on the ‘new action’ option on the action panel. It will probably help to title the photo action. Now you can begin tinkering with effects to suit what you’re hoping to achieve. Start by adding a curve. This should trace the rough outline of how you’d like the effect to layer across the picture.

From there, add a gradient. The gradient option is found from the ‘dill or adjustment layer’ menu option. You can create a basic Light leak/Lomo effect using the hex code colour Fc2c2c and the angle -100. Otherwise, you can customise these choices to suit as you get more advanced. In general, however, you don’t need to tinker with too many of the gradient options besides colour. and angle. Once you’re happy, change the layer style to screen, check http://news.filehippo.com/2014/09/customise-text-photoshop/ and reduce the opacity. Start at around 90%, although you’re free to adjust it to suit. Your light leak effect is almost done.

Yes, that’s right -you’re almost done.

For ease, we highly recommend grouping the two adjustment layers you have now created, and naming them something easy you will be able to identify with. Perhaps ‘effects’? Once you’re happy with your light leak action, you can click the ‘stop’ function. You’ve now created your action!

Running the created light leak action.

The action you have created will be available for use on any photo. You can add it to any photo you choose, and experiment with different colour combinations to bring to life the perfect Lomo or lens light leak effect for the task.

lomo effects

The quick and dirty method.

You don’t actually have to create an action to get a basic light leak effect, although it’s no where near as customisable. Instead, you can layer your base photo with a chosen light leak resource photo. Again, change the blend mode of the light leak photo layer to ‘screen’ and then play with your transform tool (Ctrl+T or Edit > Free Transform) to align the leak perfectly with the base photo for the effect you want. You can, of course, alter the transparency of the layer or layer up more then one free light leak resource to create the ultimate perfect photo.

Whichever method you choose, you’ll be creating Photoshop light leaks like a pro- enjoy!

How to add light leaks effects using free resources

Posted on 1 October, 2014 in Wedding Video

Whether you want haze, a touch of the mystical or you’re yearning for a retro touch, light leaks will help you achieve it. The good news is, it doesn’t even have to be expensive- or cost a thing! Here’s a tip or two for free light leaks downloads.

The old school way.

Light leaks occurred in film cameras, of course, because of small leaks in the box of the camera itself. The results could be beautiful, but most often created boo-boos and errors on expensive celluloid film and were mostly unwanted. These days, we mostly create light leaks very specifically in post production in order to achieve certain effects, so doing it ‘old school’ by allowing random overexposure on the lens is less usual as it’s less predictable.

However, you can create that hazy effect from the raw shoot if that’s what you want, using only plastic bags. Leave one plain, colour one with a strong bright colour, and raggedly slice open the end opposite the ziplock. Wrap the ziplocked ends around your lens, and manipulate while shooting. Plain will give you haze, and coloured some other interesting effects. All without breaking the bank!

In post production.

There’s a host of great free light leaks out there like http://lightleaklove.com/pages/about-us. You can also create your own, for ultimate control over the finished product. There’s always the paid pack options, too, but unless you want something very specific and don’t mind paying for it, free resources are the way to go!

light leaks effects

Depending on your program- for example, there are great light leaks for Adobe Premiere out there- you can find a ton of great resources with a single Google search. They’ll also vary considerably in how they work. Some talented folks are happy to offer up pre-sets, brush sets, radial filter constructions and gradient filter layouts for use in graphic programs. You’ll need to search for these dependant on the program you’re using. Don’t worry, there are a ton of great folk out there, and you’re almost sure to find for any platform from GIMP right through to Mac users and the iOS.

If you’re not wanting to tweak your work to that extent- say, it’s a quick project or you’re not as confident with these tools as a pro- there are alos great free light leak layers out there. Especially useful in programs like Photoshop, you can simply layer these with your base photo and get to work tinkering with opacity and more to create the effects you want.

Whatever your needs or intention, don’t reach for your credit card straight away- free light leak downloads are easily had on the internet, and will work as well- and in many cases better then- the paid for offerings.

Top 5 Free Light Leak Texture Packs To Retrofy Your Photos

Posted on 1 October, 2014 in Wedding Video

Looking for the best free light leaks out there? Look no further! Below, we have some awesome light leak downloads for you to play with and follow- and you don’t have to pay a cent!

What is a light leak, anyway?

If you’re not familiar with the term, light leaks used to occur involuntarily in the days of celluloid film cameras. If there was a slight gap in the box, whether by damage or poor construction, light would leak into the film. It would create lines, washes and more on the image. The results were sometimes beautiful- but, of course, very frustrating for someone looking for an entirely different result.

However, times have changed, and now that you have the freedom to tinker with light leak effects rather then have them rudely thrust upon you by chance, they’re a lot more desired. Some people choose to take the random factor of a ‘natural’ light leak by playing with lens-whacking, a technique that slightly loosens the lens and allows an emulation of that old random effect. But most modern light leaks are added in post production, and can be precisely controlled for exactly the look you want. Mostly, it’s used to create dreamy hazy looks, or a vintage retro look.

Of course, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing! Light leaks can be horribly overdone, but when used correctly can make for an awesome photo.

Can I make my own light leaks?

Yes, you certainly can. There’s even a host of different ways to create the light leak effect in most modern graphics programs. From creating your own gradient filters to making tailored brushes, creating light leaks in Adobe Premiere and other top programs is a doddle. You can even manage a passible light leak in GIMP!

But…what if I don’t know how, or don’t want to?

If you’re not sure how, but would like the challenge of creating your own effects, there’s plenty of tutorials out there, like http://www.minecrafttexturepacks.com/. However, if you’re more keen to tinker with the effect then creating the effect, there’s a ton of great free light leaks out there for you to download and use. Most of these come as light leak texture packs, and below here’s our top 5 recommendations.
