Light enters that space and does that “burning” effect to the film, but as it happens when we quickly closed this cover back, the result is just a blip, not the entire picture, or all photos from the film. Creating light leaks and Lomo effects using Photoshop isn’t as hard as you may think. And what’s even better is that you can get a ton of the resources needed to achieve it free too! Yes, that’s right- there’s free light leaks resources out there just waiting for your experiments.
Who doesn’t love the retro shading effects of a lens flare, Lomo effect or well placed light leak. While the days of film camera creating them at the inopportune moment are over, you can still create this sometimes glamorous retro look intentionally- exactly how you want it.
Getting started creating a light leak action.
Boot up your Photoshop program, and make sure you have both the image you want to great the effect in and the Lomo or light leak template you want to use to create the effect to hand unless you’d prefer to use the actions option. Start your transformation by using the Windows>Actions option, or simply pressing (Alt+ F9) to open the Actions option. Now we’re ready to go.More info here!
From the ‘actions’ panel.
Click on the ‘new action’ option on the action panel. It will probably help to title the photo action. Now you can begin tinkering with effects to suit what you’re hoping to achieve. Start by adding a curve. This should trace the rough outline of how you’d like the effect to layer across the picture.
From there, add a gradient. The gradient option is found from the ‘dill or adjustment layer’ menu option. You can create a basic Light leak/Lomo effect using the hex code colour Fc2c2c and the angle -100. Otherwise, you can customise these choices to suit as you get more advanced. In general, however, you don’t need to tinker with too many of the gradient options besides colour. and angle. Once you’re happy, change the layer style to screen, check http://news.filehippo.com/2014/09/customise-text-photoshop/ and reduce the opacity. Start at around 90%, although you’re free to adjust it to suit. Your light leak effect is almost done.
Yes, that’s right -you’re almost done.
For ease, we highly recommend grouping the two adjustment layers you have now created, and naming them something easy you will be able to identify with. Perhaps ‘effects’? Once you’re happy with your light leak action, you can click the ‘stop’ function. You’ve now created your action!
Running the created light leak action.
The action you have created will be available for use on any photo. You can add it to any photo you choose, and experiment with different colour combinations to bring to life the perfect Lomo or lens light leak effect for the task.
The quick and dirty method.
You don’t actually have to create an action to get a basic light leak effect, although it’s no where near as customisable. Instead, you can layer your base photo with a chosen light leak resource photo. Again, change the blend mode of the light leak photo layer to ‘screen’ and then play with your transform tool (Ctrl+T or Edit > Free Transform) to align the leak perfectly with the base photo for the effect you want. You can, of course, alter the transparency of the layer or layer up more then one free light leak resource to create the ultimate perfect photo.
Whichever method you choose, you’ll be creating Photoshop light leaks like a pro- enjoy!
Whether you want haze, a touch of the mystical or you’re yearning for a retro touch, light leaks will help you achieve it. The good news is, it doesn’t even have to be expensive- or cost a thing! Here’s a tip or two for free light leaks downloads.
The old school way.
Light leaks occurred in film cameras, of course, because of small leaks in the box of the camera itself. The results could be beautiful, but most often created boo-boos and errors on expensive celluloid film and were mostly unwanted. These days, we mostly create light leaks very specifically in post production in order to achieve certain effects, so doing it ‘old school’ by allowing random overexposure on the lens is less usual as it’s less predictable.
However, you can create that hazy effect from the raw shoot if that’s what you want, using only plastic bags. Leave one plain, colour one with a strong bright colour, and raggedly slice open the end opposite the ziplock. Wrap the ziplocked ends around your lens, and manipulate while shooting. Plain will give you haze, and coloured some other interesting effects. All without breaking the bank!
In post production.
There’s a host of great free light leaks out there like http://lightleaklove.com/pages/about-us. You can also create your own, for ultimate control over the finished product. There’s always the paid pack options, too, but unless you want something very specific and don’t mind paying for it, free resources are the way to go!
Depending on your program- for example, there are great light leaks for Adobe Premiere out there- you can find a ton of great resources with a single Google search. They’ll also vary considerably in how they work. Some talented folks are happy to offer up pre-sets, brush sets, radial filter constructions and gradient filter layouts for use in graphic programs. You’ll need to search for these dependant on the program you’re using. Don’t worry, there are a ton of great folk out there, and you’re almost sure to find for any platform from GIMP right through to Mac users and the iOS.
If you’re not wanting to tweak your work to that extent- say, it’s a quick project or you’re not as confident with these tools as a pro- there are alos great free light leak layers out there. Especially useful in programs like Photoshop, you can simply layer these with your base photo and get to work tinkering with opacity and more to create the effects you want.
Whatever your needs or intention, don’t reach for your credit card straight away- free light leak downloads are easily had on the internet, and will work as well- and in many cases better then- the paid for offerings.
Looking for the best free light leaks out there? Look no further! Below, we have some awesome light leak downloads for you to play with and follow- and you don’t have to pay a cent!
What is a light leak, anyway?
If you’re not familiar with the term, light leaks used to occur involuntarily in the days of celluloid film cameras. If there was a slight gap in the box, whether by damage or poor construction, light would leak into the film. It would create lines, washes and more on the image. The results were sometimes beautiful- but, of course, very frustrating for someone looking for an entirely different result.
However, times have changed, and now that you have the freedom to tinker with light leak effects rather then have them rudely thrust upon you by chance, they’re a lot more desired. Some people choose to take the random factor of a ‘natural’ light leak by playing with lens-whacking, a technique that slightly loosens the lens and allows an emulation of that old random effect. But most modern light leaks are added in post production, and can be precisely controlled for exactly the look you want. Mostly, it’s used to create dreamy hazy looks, or a vintage retro look.
Of course, there’s such a thing as too much of a good thing! Light leaks can be horribly overdone, but when used correctly can make for an awesome photo.
Can I make my own light leaks?
Yes, you certainly can. There’s even a host of different ways to create the light leak effect in most modern graphics programs. From creating your own gradient filters to making tailored brushes, creating light leaks in Adobe Premiere and other top programs is a doddle. You can even manage a passible light leak in GIMP!
But…what if I don’t know how, or don’t want to?
If you’re not sure how, but would like the challenge of creating your own effects, there’s plenty of tutorials out there, like http://www.minecrafttexturepacks.com/. Light leaks used to be the film photographer’s bane- where light would leak through onto the film and create flare effects and wash out the photographs when the photographer of filmographer had not intended for it to happen. However, it’s being used more and more as a trendy new way to spice up dull pictures and create a nifty vintage look to your work. Here’s the low down on light leaks:
In camera or in post?
This answer will depend on what you’re doing. If you’re just tinkering for fun, it will depend on the mood you’re in. If you’re looking to achieve something very specific, it will undoubtedly be easier to achieve it in post production, as you will have a ton more control over how the finished product come out. Ultimately, your goals, your time constraints and how you feel about the project will impact which method you’d choose.
Tell me more about achieving light leaks in camera.
Modern light leaks are achieved mostly through a technique called ‘lens-whacking’, where the lens is slightly lifted away from the camera to allow a teensy bit of light to leak in.
Although we no longer work with expensive celluloid film and you can feel free to experiment to your heart’s [or data card’s] content, you still don’t have an awful lot of control over how light leaks form on the camera. The plus side is, that in the age of digital cameras you can immediately see the result of a light leak and decide if you like it. It just might not be easy to replicate, or to adjust with any kind of regularity. Choose this method when you’re laying around, having fun or experimenting artistically.more detailed info on the website http://lightleaklove.com/pages/testimonials.
Light leaks in post production.
Adding a light leak in post production will give you ultimate control over the results. And if you don’t like it, you can just change it. While it is ‘cheating’ in a way, as it’s not the product of a natural shot, it’s a ton more reliable. It can be used to make beautiful but ‘flat’ imagery unique, and is a popular choice for wedding photos, of course. That’s the sort of situation that has to be done in post, as you’ve no way of knowing what shot you have until then. It’s usually best not to risk a paying shoot on possibly-worthless in camera shots, so unless your model is happy to be part of the experiment, post production is generally best for client’s shots.
Post-producing light leaks is actually fairly easy, especially as a ton of free light leaks and light leak downloads are out there to be had. If you don’t feel confident enough in your gradient and brush skills to create your own, these wonderful packs can make your life considerably easier, and you can find them in almost any colour, shape and type you could want.
Whether you want to achieve your light leak effects via post production or in camera is a choice that’s up to you, your goals and wants.
